Black algae in pool: identify it, then get rid of it

Black algae is the hardest of the common algae to remove, because it builds a waxy protective layer and roots itself into rough surfaces. That layer is why normal sanitiser levels barely touch it, and why brushing — not chemistry — is what actually breaks the cycle.

What black algae actually is

Black algae is a cyanobacterium: a photosynthetic organism that forms a protective waxy coating and anchors into porous or rough surfaces. Underneath that coating it is really dark blue-green, which is why a fresh smear looks almost black on a wall and green on a white cloth.

Because it grows into the surface rather than sitting on top of it, the removal problem is mechanical first and chemical second. Anything that only adds chemicals and never brushes will lose.

Black algae or a black stain?

This is the first thing to settle, because metal staining is a different problem with a different fix — and treating a stain as algae wastes weeks.

If it smears, treat it as algae. If it does not, it is a stain and you should not be adding algaecide to it.

Where it hides

Every one of those places has to be brushed. A wall-only pass leaves the organism exactly where it was.

The non-chemical half: brush it, then keep brushing

The one-line version: black algae is beaten by brushing plus sustained sanitiser, in that order. Brushing alone relapses; chemistry alone never gets under the coating.

The chemical half — and why we do not give you a number

Eliminating black algae means holding chlorine at an elevated level, matched to your cyanuric acid level, for long enough that the organism is killed rather than knocked back. That is a dose, and the right value depends on your stabiliser reading — which is exactly the kind of calculation we have not published yet.

Does black algae go away on its own?

No. It is anchored in the surface and protected by a waxy coating. Left alone it spreads, and every week you wait makes the brushing job bigger.

Can I swim in a pool with black algae?

We would not. Algae growing means your sanitiser is not keeping up, and that is a water-quality concern regardless of the algae itself. Treat it first.

Will shocking alone kill black algae?

Not reliably. The waxy layer shields the organism from the water, so chemistry without brushing mostly skims the problem. Brush first, then treat.

Can I use a stainless steel brush on my liner?

No. Stainless is for plaster. On vinyl or fibreglass use a nylon brush — the steel one will scratch the surface and leave permanent marks.

How long does it take to get rid of black algae?

Weeks rather than days, and it depends on how long it has been established. If it returns quickly after treatment, the usual cause is high cyanuric acid or an unbrushed hiding place.
