CYA / stabiliser calculator

Cyanuric acid protects chlorine from sunlight — but too much of it makes your chlorine less effective, and you cannot filter it out. This calculator tells you how much to add to reach a target without overshooting.

Add approximately 6.67 lb (106.7 oz) of cyanuric acid to raise CYA by 40 ppm to 40 ppm.

Guidance range for this pool type: 3050 ppm

How to add it
  1. Put the calculated amount in a fine sock or stocking.
  2. Hang it in front of a return, or place it in the skimmer basket with the pump running.
  3. Squeeze the sock periodically until it is empty.
  4. Run the pump 24–48 h and do not backwash during this window.
  5. Retest after 48 h — CYA reads can take a day or two to settle.
Do not backwash or clean the filter for 24–48 h after adding — you will wash the undissolved product out.
CYA does not break down in practice; the only practical way to lower it is to drain and replace water.

How the calculation works

pounds of cyanuric acid = (target ppm − current ppm) × gallons ÷ 120,000

Same divisor convention as salt dosing. See the source register for its confidence level and what still needs checking.

Typical CYA targets

Pool typeCommonly cited CYA range
Outdoor, chlorine-fed3050 ppm
Salt water (chlorinator)6080 ppm
Indoor poolGenerally not needed — there is no sunlight to protect against

Why you can't filter CYA out

Cyanuric acid is not removed by normal filtration or backwashing in practice; the practical way to lower it is draining/replacing water. That makes CYA a one-way ratchet in practice: every time you use stabilised chlorine (dichlor, trichlor) or add stabiliser, the level creeps up. The standard way back down is to drain part of the pool and refill with fresh water.

That is why it pays to add less than you think. If you are between two amounts, add the smaller one and retest.

Do not backwash for 24–48 hours after adding. Undissolved stabiliser sitting in the filter will go straight down the drain.
