Pool pump timer: how long to run and when
A pool pump timer does one thing: it stops you from running the pump on a hunch. The hours you need come from your pool volume and your pump's flow rate; the time of day is about cost and water quality. This page covers both, plus how to choose the timer itself.
Start with turnover, not with the clock
The physical minimum is one full turnover: the time for the entire body of water to pass through the filter once. Everything else — weather, bather load, debris — is judgment layered on top.
Turnover scales directly with volume, so a guess here is a guess everywhere else. Work out the hours first, then set the timer to match.
The best time of day to run a pool pump
- Off-peak tariff. If your utility charges by time of use, the same number of hours costs less overnight. This is the single easiest saving available to most pool owners.
- When the pool is used. Sanitiser needs to be circulating when people are actually in the water, and for a while afterwards to clear bather waste.
- Heat and sunlight. In very hot climates, some chlorination and circulation during daylight helps keep up with UV loss. In mild ones, this matters much less than the tariff.
- Noise. If the pump is near a bedroom or a neighbour, overnight running is a real problem. A variable-speed pump running slowly at night is often the compromise.
If you have no time-of-use pricing and no noise problem, the total hours matter more than when you run them.
One long block, or two shorter ones?
Two blocks — say early morning and late afternoon — keeps chlorine moving at the two times the pool is most likely to be used, and fits a time-of-use tariff neatly. One long block is simpler and loses less to repeated priming and skimming start-up.
Either is fine. What is not fine is cutting total runtime because you split it up and assumed that counted as more.
Choosing a timer

If you are buying anyway and your utility has peak pricing, a timer with a real time-of-use schedule pays for itself. If you already have a variable-speed pump, use its onboard schedule and save the money.
Variable-speed pumps change the arithmetic
Energy use falls roughly with the cube of speed: halving the speed is closer to one-eighth the power, while flow only halves. That is why a variable-speed pump running a long, slow schedule usually beats a single-speed pump running a short, fast one — you get the same turnover for far less electricity.
The practical consequence: with a variable-speed pump your timer schedule should be long and gentle, not short and aggressive. Work out the turnover you need, then find the speed that delivers it at the lowest power.
Safety: this is mains wiring
A pump timer is installed in a mains circuit, usually 240 volts, and usually within a few feet of a large body of water. This is not a job to learn on.
- It must be on a dedicated circuit with ground-fault protection, per your local electrical code.
- The enclosure must be rated for a wet, outdoor location.
- Power must be isolated upstream before anything is opened.
- If you are not certain how to isolate and verify dead, hire a licensed electrician. This is exactly the kind of job where the licence is worth it.
Freeze protection
If you leave the pool running into cold weather, a timer that can start the pump on low temperature is worth having. Without it, a cold snap can freeze a pump that is sitting idle.

How many hours a day should I run my pool pump?

Is it cheaper to run the pool pump at night?
On a time-of-use tariff, usually yes — the same hours cost less off-peak. Without peak pricing, it makes little difference to the bill.
Should I run the pump 24 hours a day?
Almost never for a residential pool. It costs a lot and buys very little beyond what a correct turnover already delivers. The exception is short-term events like an algae treatment or heavy bather load.
Can I install a pool pump timer myself?
Only if you are competent with mains wiring, know your local code and can verify the circuit is dead. Otherwise hire a licensed electrician. It is a 240-volt circuit next to water.
Do I still need a timer with a variable-speed pump?
Usually not a separate one. Variable-speed pumps have onboard schedules, and adding an external timer can actually fight with the pump's own logic.
